Battle

  • Ukraine said one man was killed and eight people, including a 15-year-old boy, were injured when Russia shelled residential buildings in the village of Bohodukhiv in the northeastern Kharkiv region.

  • According to the regional prosecutor’s office, two people were killed and one injured in a Russian-directed bomb attack on the north-eastern Ukrainian region of Sumy.

  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited the Sumy region on the border with Russia’s Kursk region, where Ukraine launched a surprise cross-border offensive earlier this month. He met with Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskii and said the Ukrainian military had taken control of another Russian village and captured more prisoners of war. He did not name the settlement.
  • The Ukrainian military said Russian forces had carried out 53 attacks on enemy positions on the Pokrovsk front in eastern Ukraine and were intensifying efforts to capture the strategically important town. Pokrovsk residents were ordered to evacuate as Russian soldiers live just 10 km from the town. Ukrainian officials said this week that about 50,000 people still lived in Pokrovsk.

  • Russia said its forces had taken control of the village of Mezhove, between Pokrovsk and Avdiivka, which it captured in February.

  • Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed without evidence that Ukrainian forces tried to attack the Kursk nuclear power plant in a nighttime raid. There was no response from Ukraine. Fighting broke out about 30 kilometers from the plant and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) called on both sides to exercise restraint. IAEA chief Rafael Grossi will visit the area next week.
  • A ferry carrying 30 fuel tanks sank in the Russian port of Kavkaz in the southern Krasnodar region after a Ukrainian attack, local authorities said. Seventeen crew members were rescued and the search for the other two continues. There was no comment from Ukraine.

  • The US embassy in Kyiv warned of an increased risk of Russian missile and drone attacks across Ukraine as the country prepares to mark the 33rd anniversary of its independence from the Soviet Union on Saturday.

  • Officials in Washington told the Associated Press that the United States would provide Ukraine with about $125 million in new military aid, including anti-aircraft missiles, ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) and artillery. The deal is expected to be officially announced on Friday.
  • The Ukrainian Air Force said it used an American-made GBU-39 bomb to attack a Russian train command post in the Kursk region.
