Battle

  • President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukrainian forces were advancing in Russia’s Kursk region, with Kyiv claiming control of at least 1,000 square kilometers of Russia. Ukraine said the week-long offensive was aimed at creating a strategic buffer zone to protect its border areas from Russian attacks.
  • Moscow said the area controlled by Ukraine was about half the size of the area claimed by Kyiv and that attempts by Ukraine to advance deeper into five areas in the Kursk region had been thwarted.
  • Ukraine said its army would allow the evacuation of civilians from the Kursk region to Russia and Ukraine and allow international humanitarian organizations to enter the area.
  • A state of emergency has been declared in the Russian border region of Belgorod because, according to the governor, Ukrainian bombings are occurring daily.
