Another video game finds its way into the film world: ruiner, the sci-fi shooter from Reikon Games and Devolver Digital.

Per diversityDirector Wes Ball (of Planet of the Apes and later Legend of Zelda fame) will adapt the game for Universal Pictures and will be produced by History Kitchen and 87North.

It is the latest video game from Universal, which recently entered the game-to-film scene with the hugely successful films “Super Mario” and “Five Nights at Freddy’s”.

Ruiner was released in 2017 and is set in the cyberpunk future of 2091. Players take on the role of a mute character nicknamed “Puppy” who embarks on a journey to save her brother from a conglomerate called Heaven that rules the city of Rengkok.

According to Variety Ruiner has amassed 4 million players since its release. It first released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, followed by the Nintendo Switch in 2020.

Reikon itself has not yet commented on the adaptation, but co-founders Marek Roefler, Jakub Styliński and Magdalena Tomkowicz will all serve as executive producers on the film.

In general, things have been quiet in Reikon since last January, when 80 percent Employees (60-70) were laid off. The status of the current project, codenamed “Final Form,” remains unclear after these cuts.
