Steven Watt, CEO of Rose Marketing UK, explained how retailers can capitalise on the Christmas shopping season.

“Christmas brings the biggest increase in sales for confectionery and last year it was the highest selling category with growth of +17.3%. With 97% of households purchasing confectionery and spending an average of £55 per person during the festive period, it is vital for retailers to offer a range of guaranteed festive favourites to really get their tills ringing this Christmas.

“A third of consumers started shopping earlier in 2023 than in previous years, and it is likely that this trend will continue this year.

“Not only does this spread the cost of the event, but it also makes shoppers feel better prepared for what is traditionally a hectic time.

“So clear shelves in October to make room for Christmas candy when shoppers’ preparations come to the fore.

“November is the time of year for many people and the Christmas countdown really begins. In addition to having sufficient stock in October, it is important that these remain available until Christmas to enable last-minute purchases.

“Showcase holiday collections on regular candy shelves and create additional seasonal displays. This makes selection easier and encourages impulse purchases. Gondola ends are another way to increase visibility and boost sales.

“With pressure on the cost of living, many households will be looking to cut costs over the festive period. Sharing boxes, sweets and chocolates can bring back memories and add comfort to festive occasions.

“They are often viewed as more affordable indulgences, so it is imperative to stock a wide range of sweet treats to increase that all-important profit.”
