Richardson switches back on

Richardson switches back on

The Indianapolis Colts took to the field at Grand Park Sports Campus in Westfield, Indiana, for the final time during training camp on Thursday, capping a week that included two joint practices with the Arizona Cardinals.

The day was dominated by pouring rain, which lasted for most of the hour and a half training session. As expected, ball control and surefootedness were a bit of an issue.

Here are Horseshoe Huddle‘s observations during the evening.

— Running back Trey Sermon (hamstring), wide receiver Ashton Dulin (hamstring), linebacker Cameron McGrone and Liam Anderson all missed Thursday’s practice. Defensive tackle Raekwon Davis (active/non-football illness, high blood pressure) remains out.

— The teams played 1-on-1 wide receiver versus cornerback on Thursday, working from the defense’s 15-yard line. Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson promptly scored touchdowns to Michael Pittman Jr., who outran the defender and caught the ball in the back corner of the end zone, and rookies Anthony Gould and AD Mitchell. DJ Montgomery, Juwann Winfree, Derek Slywka and Greg Ward also scored.

— Richardson had a rough day for most of practice due to the weather, completing just 2 of 5 passes (40%), but when the two-minute drills began at the end of practice, he flipped a switch. Richardson completed 2 of 3 passes on the final drive, connecting with Pittman and Mitchell and getting a big defensive pass interference call on Pierce that put them in the low red zone. From there, Richardson ran the ball in from 7 yards out. For the second day in a row, the Colts’ first offense scored a point in six plays during the two-minute drill at the end of practice.

— Not all receivers handled the wet conditions well, but Pierce and Winfree both had solid days. Pierce caught two touchdowns from Richardson during 7-on-7 in the red zone and Winfree made two difficult catches in the end zone that set up points for Flacco.

— The Colts’ first and second defenses stopped the Cardinals’ first and second offenses on all four attempts of their two-minute drives. One of the second defense’s stops ended with an interception by cornerback Darrell Baker Jr. against Cardinals backup QB Clayton Tune.

— For the second straight day, Colts linemen Laiatu Latu and DeForest Buckner were virtually unblockable. Latu recorded at least one possible sack on Cardinals QB Kyler Murray while he and Buckner relentlessly pressured the backfield.

— It was a comeback day for Colts cornerback JuJu Brents, who struggled on Wednesday but was much more tenacious in coverage on Thursday. He was even able to intercept a pass from Murray during 7-on-7. Fellow cornerback Kenny Moore II also made a big move, intercepting Murray during 7-on-7. Third cornerback Jaylon Jones had a rough day, however, as Cardinals rookie receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. was able to make some successful plays against him.

The Colts will have one final training camp against the Cincinnati Bengals in Ohio next week before the two teams conclude their preseason training on Thursday night.
