Residents shocked after bullets hit homes in York County

YORK COUNTY, SC (WBTV) – A very dangerous situation is troubling neighbors in rural York County.

Over the course of several nights, an unknown person has been shooting wildly in the area. So far, three homes in Rock Hill have been hit and there are fears that someone could be seriously injured.

“We were lying in bed right on the other side of that wall… and the bullet hit right here,” said one homeowner.

A normally quiet part of the county was rocked by gunfire, some of which was recorded on home surveillance cameras.

Dugan Meredith has lived in the area for nearly a decade. He said he enjoys the peace and quiet of country life. But since the shooting, it has been anything but peaceful or quiet, he said.

“I heard something hitting the back of the house, it sounded like a baseball bat,” Meredith recalled the shots.

He called other neighbors who said they heard the same thing. When he went outside to investigate, he saw the bullet hole marring the back wall.

“(I) played the footage from my security camera and I heard two gunshots and about two seconds later the bullet hit my house,” he said.

Luckily, no one was hurt, said Meredith. He had just hosted a garden party for his daughter’s 16th birthday and shuddered at the thought of what could have happened.

“You never know what will happen each night,” he said.

The York County Sheriff’s Office said two other homes along Rambo Road and Ogden Road were also hit with bullets from the night’s shooting.

Trent Faris of the sheriff’s office said officers are sending extra forces to the area to find out who is responsible for the shooting. He said whoever did it is putting other people’s lives in danger.

“Irresponsible is the word,” said Faris. “Irresponsible and dangerous.”

Although no one has been injured so far, residents of the area fear that sooner or later a bullet could hit an unintended target.

“If it gets into a home and hurts someone and, God forbid, kills someone … you’re going to pay dearly for it,” Faris said.

The sheriff’s office just wants the shooting to stop — and fast — and they need the public’s help to do that. Anyone who knows who is behind the gun is asked to contact police.
