Residents outraged after 62-year-old attacked by teenagers on Staten Island

STATEN ISLAND (WABC) — Local residents are outraged after a group of youths chased and beat a 62-year-old man.

Two teenagers, a 13-year-old and a 14-year-old, were charged because they were minors, police said.

“I saw the whole video. This was not the only person these two harassed and then threatened to attack,” said Staten Island Borough President Vito Fossella.

A 62-year-old man was brutally beaten while taking his daily walk through his neighborhood, police said.

“He was knocked down, lost a tooth or two, ended up in the hospital and needs surgery,” Fossella said.

It happened last month at the intersection of Howard Avenue and Clove Road in Sunnyside, Staten Island

On Monday morning, local MPs met to discuss the incident.

“I think we all agree that the actions you commit as a teenager, whether they’re violent or stupid, shouldn’t ruin the rest of your life. But there have to be consequences for criminal acts,” said James Clinton of the Staten Island District Attorney’s Office.

Surveillance video shows the 62-year-old victim walking down Clove Road being chased by nine teenagers.

When he reached the corner, he turned sharply left and ran across the street as the suspects pursued him, a video shows.

The actual attack occurred outside the surveillance camera’s field of view.

“What happened in this case has already been forwarded to the family court,” Fossella said.

In 2018, New York raised the age at which a juvenile can be charged as an adult from 16 to 18.

Cases in which the perpetrator is under 18 years of age are referred to the family court.

New York State Senator Jessica Scarcella-Spanton has introduced a bill that would allow minors to be charged as adults in exceptional circumstances and when significant physical injuries are present.

“Our district attorney should be able to continue to prosecute cases of violent crimes such as gang attacks that occurred in this context,” Scarcella-Spanton said.

So far, only two teenagers have been arrested.

“The vast majority, 98, 99 percent of the kids that come to our schools are great kids. Our goal right now is to isolate one or two kids, like the kids that did what they did here a few weeks ago, and that will not be tolerated on Staten Island,” Fossella said.
