Report: Grandmother charged after drug overdose of her two-year-old

A 47-year-old Indianapolis grandmother is reportedly facing multiple charges in the death of her two-year-old grandson, Amani Day, who was found unconscious in bed next to her on October 20, 2023.

Tasha Mulcahy, the grandmother, had been caring for Amani and his older sister since January 2023, when their mother died of an overdose, local reports show.

According to local news station Fox 59, Mulcahy reported that Amani had been acting normal the night before and playing with other children. She stated that she was the only one in bed with Amani when she woke up at 11 a.m. to find him cold, stiff and vomiting on the pillow. Mulcahy attempted CPR and Amani’s father tried to give him Narcan, which reverses the effects of opiates, but the child did not respond.

The Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) Child Abuse Unit was called to the south Indianapolis home to investigate the child’s death.

During their first interaction with Mulcahy, police noticed signs of possible intoxication, according to the officer who answered the call. He said Mulcahy appeared lethargic, her pupils were small and she spoke sluggishly, Fox 59 reported. She also reportedly kept dozing off during the conversation.

Mulcahy said she had only smoked marijuana the night before and taken Klonopin, a medication for seizures and panic disorders, the morning after she found Amani.

Mulcahy agreed to a voluntary drug test that same day, which, according to court records, returned positive results for methamphetamine, marijuana, benzodiazepines (including Xanax and Klonopin), amphetamines and buprenorphine, an opioid.

An autopsy later determined that Amani had died from ingesting fentanyl. During their investigation, police found a purse in the bedroom where Mulcahy and Amani had been sleeping. Inside the purse, officers found 59 different drugs, including magic mushrooms, alprazolam, THC and methamphetamine, according to Fox.

In a subsequent interview, Mulcahy said she had taken meth and that the purse containing the drugs was right next to Amani’s side of the bed.

Mulcany is awaiting trial under house arrest after posting $5,000 bail. A trial date has not yet been set, but an attorneys’ conference is scheduled for August 27.

She was charged with several crimes, including neglect of a dependent person resulting in death, a Level 1 felony in Indiana. If convicted, Mulcahy faces up to 40 years in prison, according to Fox 59.
