(MENAFN- Newsroom Panama) Panama and the United States will launch repatriation flights next Tuesday, August 20, for migrants who have crossed the
Darien
Jungle, as part of a cooperation agreement between the two countries.
This was announced by the President of the Republic of Panama,
José Raúl Mulino in an interview with the American network
tv.
“On 20 August
“We should have the first flight. It will be very useful and the impact and the news it will generate,” Mulino said. “I am deeply sorry, but I know why many of them are fleeing. The political crisis in Venezuela is crushing them and they are looking for another dream,” Mulino said in the interview, which took place in the Dominican Republic.
The President attended the inauguration of the Dominican President this Friday.
Luis Abinader.
Mulino said these repatriation flights come at no cost to Panama and that the problem lies with the United States, whose border is in Darien, not Texas.
It should be recalled that at the beginning of July this year, Panama and the United States signed an agreement under which the United States will finance the repatriation of migrants arriving from Colombia who do not have a legal basis for staying in Panama.
Since 2021, Panama has seen an increase in the number of irregular migrants crossing the Darien jungle.
Last year, 520,000 people did this.
Most of these migrants are Venezuelans whose goal is to reach the United States.
In early July, Panamanian authorities blocked several border crossings used by migrants with barbed wire to better control travelers in areas under security surveillance.
