CHESTERFIELD, Va. (WWBT) – The family of 21-year-old Kayla Healey, who was shot and killed in Chesterfield on August 7 near an industrial complex on Battery Brooke Parkway, is speaking out.

Healey’s mother, Alice Watkins, said Healey often attended car meets throughout Richmond, but on the last night she was there, her condition took a turn for the worse.

Watkins told 12 On Your Side that her daughter was punched in the face and then shot while she sat in her truck trying to call for help.

“My daughter was sitting in her truck calling 911 when she was shot through her back window,” she said. “Gun violence must stop.”

Paramedics took the young mother to the hospital, where she died a few days later.

“This is an innocent 21-year-old mother of two,” Watkins said. “My daughter… my best friend in the whole world… She wasn’t just my baby. She was my everything. Now I don’t have a little girl anymore.”

Healey leaves behind two little girls, both under the age of six.

“I just want to know why. Why did you have to kill my baby?” Watkins said. “Why did you have to take her away from your children? There is no reason in the world you can give me for what you did to my family, what you did to two little girls who will no longer have their mother.”

Her family wants the world to remember her the way she does, sharing that Healey enjoyed cooking, dancing and spending time with her daughters and husband.

Her husband told 12 On Your Side that she was pregnant at the time of her murder.

“For the amazing and beautiful and caring and understanding person that she is. I want you to remember that she was a wonderful mother,” Watkins said.

Watkins was well-liked by those around her and said the owner of a food truck she worked for raised money so Kayla Healey could have a proper funeral and burial.

According to the family’s GoFundMe campaign, the funeral will be held on Saturday, August 24.

Both women involved in Healey’s death are now in custody and facing numerous charges.
