On Wednesday afternoon, three former Texas A&M Aggies football players were told they would have to find work elsewhere.
Their stints with their respective NFL clubs came to an abrupt end when they were released one day after the league’s 53-man active rosters were formed.
The Carolina Panthers had the dubious honor of releasing two of the three former Aggies. The Panthers waived defensive tackle Jayden Peevy and defensive back Demani Richardson. The two must come off the waivers list at 2 p.m. ET on Thursday to be eligible for the Panthers’ practice squad. Any team can submit a waiver request for either of them until noon Thursday.
Richardson signed with the Panthers as an undrafted free agent. Richardson performed well in practice and preseason games, but was not enough to replace any of the other defensive backs on the roster. Peevy signed with the Tennessee Titans last season, had a rough time and was released. He signed a futures contract with the Cleveland Browns in January, but was released after the draft. He wanted to make a fresh start with coach Dave Canales in Carolina.
Veteran running back Trayveon Williams’ contract with the Cincinnati Bengals has been terminated. Since he is an experienced veteran, he does not have to go through the waivers list and can immediately sign a practice or standard contract.
Williams was released after the Bengals signed defensive end KJ Henry. There are rumors that Williams will either be brought back for one of the remaining practice squad spots. He could also be re-signed to the active roster if a position opens up.
