Shafer, Our Game primarily centers on Maria, a successful college softball player who faces the ultimate decision: pursue an advanced degree or pursue her dream of playing baseball professionally alongside the boys of the summer. With the support of Benjamin Hughes, a prominent African-American entrepreneur and baseball team owner, the baseball commissioner, and a network of allies, Maria challenges the status quo. She also faces strong opposition from those who don’t want her there. Subplots within the cast list also contribute to the story, including Maria’s softball coach Debbye, a victim of cruel abuse named Michelle, and a connection to a former All-American Girl. From the baseball mounds and locker rooms to a luxury yacht with the President of the United States, Maria’s quest to boldly fulfill her lifelong dream will resonate for many generations to come.
Our Game, by Jeffrey P. Shafer, takes the popular game of baseball and brings relevant social issues like gender equality and racial discrimination to the forefront. Maria isn’t the first girl to dream of playing in the MLB, but her quest to break barriers as the first female professional baseball player sheds light on the struggles women face in male-dominated fields. I really appreciated that Shafer was able to deftly blend real historical events with fiction, bringing in characters like Shoeless Joe Jackson, Pete Rose, and Benjamin Hughes. Hughes in particular proves to be one of my favorites and is fully fleshed out. Crucial to Maria’s journey is his ability to draw on his own backstory as an African American woman, from the depths of the Great Depression in Philadelphia to prominence in the business and sports worlds. Shafer tells us that baseball is everyone’s game because it’s “Our Game,” and this book is the perfect bite of fiction with a great story and a nostalgic trip through America’s favorite pastime. Highly recommended.”
