The Rabun County Sheriff’s suspension has been extended for 30 days, according to a press release.

Sheriff Chad Nichols was arrested in late May as part of an investigation into allegations of sexual abuse.

Sheriff Nichols was charged with public nuisance, sexual assault and abuse of office.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said it was asked by Mountain Judicial Circuit District Attorney George Christian to investigate “an incident” involving the sheriff on May 24.

A source told FOX 5 Atlanta at the time that a woman told investigators the sheriff tried to catch her alone in a building where a campaign rally was being held the day before the May 21 primary election. She also told investigators she later saw Nichols naked in a sex act.

After the sheriff turned himself in, Major Beth Darnell took over the role of sheriff while the case was investigated.

The sheriff was initially suspended for 60 days on June 14. On August 12, this suspension was extended by 30 days.

No further information was provided by the sheriff’s office.
