R. Kelly wants to change his defense before trial in New York

NEW YORK (AP) — Imprisoned R&B singer R. Kelly wants to restructure his defense team two months before his scheduled trial in New York on federal organized crime charges.

His two top lawyers, Steve Greenberg and Michael Leonard of Chicago, filed a motion this week to withdraw from the long-delayed case, arguing that it was “impossible” for them to “adequately represent Mr. Kelly under the current circumstances.”

U.S. District Judge Ann Donnelly did not immediately grant the request and requested further details about the apparent disputes within Kelly’s legal team.

“Sometimes you can’t save someone from themselves,” Greenberg wrote on Twitter this week, “no matter how hard you try.”

A request for comment was sent to Greenberg and Leonard on Thursday.

Two other lawyers for Kelly, Thomas A. Farinella and Nicole Becker Blank, told the judge that the restructuring would not affect Kelly’s Aug. 9 trial date in Brooklyn federal court. They said Kelly fired Greenberg and Leonard.

Kelly, 54, is accused of running an organization made up of his managers, bodyguards and other associates who helped him recruit women and girls for sex. Federal prosecutors say the group sought out victims at concerts and other events and arranged trips for them to see Kelly.

The Grammy-winning singer denies ever having abused anyone.

Kelly also faces numerous sexual offenses in Illinois and Minnesota, and is scheduled to appear in federal court in Chicago in September.
