By Gina Cherelus (Reuters) – Singer R. Kelly was released from a Chicago jail on Saturday after paying more than $161,000 in child support to an ex-wife, police said, ending his second prison sentence in two weeks after he was previously arrested on sexual assault charges. The 52-year-old singer was arrested on Wednesday for failing to pay child support for three children he has with Andrea Lee. The Cook County Sheriff’s Office had said he must pay the full amount to get out. “I promise you, we’ll get this all worked out,” Kelly told reporters and some fans gathered outside the Cook County Jail. “That’s all I can say right now.” Sam Randall, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office, said in a phone interview Saturday that the source of the payment was unclear, noting that the name section on the bail slip had been left blank. “Anonymity is pretty rare in this situation,” Randall said. “Usually, this section of the form is filled out.” Celebrity website TMZ cited sources close to Kelly as saying an unidentified benefactor helped him. Kelly’s attorney Steve Greenberg declined to comment via email whether the child support payment was made by Kelly or someone else. Last month, Kelly was arrested and pleaded not guilty to charges of sexually abusing three teenage girls and a fourth woman. He has denied similar abuse allegations for decades. In 2008, the singer was charged with child pornography and found not guilty. Kelly was released from jail on bail on February 25 and had complained of financial difficulties since then. In an interview with CBS, he said that “so many people” had access to his bank account and stole from him. In the interview, he also tearfully and angrily denied allegations that he had sex with underage girls.
