Warner Bros. Games has announced that Quidditch Champions will include the Triwizard Quidditch Cup, as well as special playing fields themed around Hogwarts, Beauxbatons and Durmstrang.
The game’s career mode allows players to advance to the Triwizard Quidditch Cup, where they can choose one of the three schools and play against iconic characters from each school. Cedric Diggory, Ron Weasley and Harry Potter himself represent Hogwarts, while Fleur Delacour competes for Beauxbatons. Viktor Krum headlines the Durmstrang team.
The Triwizard Tournament was a major part of the Goblet of Fire movie, where Fleur, Vikto, Cedric, and Harry fought for the crown (and Cedric was ultimately killed), but this is the first Quidditch tournament between the three schools. However, the Goblet of Fire movie began with Harry and his friends attending the Quidditch World Cup (which does not appear in Quidditch Champions).
Developers at Unbroken Studios have taken creative liberties with how each school’s Quidditch team might look. For example, the developers have designed “finely crafted” brooms for the Beaubatons and a “perfectly manicured” pitch to match the school’s reputation. The Durmstrang team, on the other hand, competes on “rugged brooms in rough conditions” to match the school’s more intense atmosphere.
The Beauxbatons pitch is located in the Pyrenees in the south of France, while the Durmstrang pitch is in the far north of Europe.
“To contrast Beauxbatons’ picturesque daytime weather, we placed Durmstrang’s pitch at night in the light of the Aurora Borealis. Viking-inspired architecture can be seen around the pitch, with minimal flames to maintain the school’s secrecy,” the developers said. “The pitch itself is set some distance from the school for the same reason, and the iconic ship that students travel on is docked next to the pitch, which is surrounded by water. The pitch’s surface is made of frozen black stone to ensure that athletes who fall off their broom learn from every mistake.”
The Hogwarts pitch may be familiar to fans from the film series and needs no introduction (and the studios didn’t provide one in the announcement post either).
Quidditch Champions is the second Harry Potter game in as many years, following 2023’s hugely successful Hogwarts Legacy. It was the overall best-selling game in the US in 2023, outselling even Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III.
The $30 game will be released digitally for console and PC on September 3rd. PlayStation Plus subscribers will get it for free for the first month. A physical edition for Xbox and PlayStation will be released on November 8th, with a version of the game for Switch to follow later in the year.
