Primary Election Day in Florida: What you should know

ORANGE COUNTY, Florida. – It’s primary day in Florida.

Polls open Tuesday morning. This election features party primaries and nonpartisan races for the following positions:

  • 1 seat in the US Senate

  • Several seats in Congress

  • Members of the Florida Legislature (Florida Senate and Florida House of Representatives)

  • Prosecutors

  • County offices (commissioners, school board members, sheriffs, election officials, etc.)

  • Judicial offices

  • City elections and referendums

When voters go to the polls, there are numerous primaries that could determine the final vote count.

In Osceola County, Sheriff Marcos Lopez could be removed from office. He has come under scrutiny in recent years following cases of violence and faces a Democratic primary with four challengers.

In the Florida State Parliament, there is a heated debate between incumbent Senator Geraldine Thompson and former Senator Randolph Bracy over the seat in Florida’s 15th Senate District.

The seat in the 8th US House of Representatives district is up for grabs after Congressman Bill Posey announced his resignation. Three Republicans are running in the conservative district on the Atlantic coast.

The only statewide race is the U.S. Senate. Four Democrats are running to challenge Rick Scott. He also faces two challengers in the primaries, but is expected to easily win the election in November.

Election officials, meanwhile, are placing value on transparency, as is the case in Orange County, where cameras are used during voting.

The vote for commission seats in Orange County would go to a runoff election if a candidate does not receive more than 50% of the vote.

The polling stations open at 7 a.m.
