Preparing new students for campus life

Preparing new students for campus life

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – Mississippi State professors and student volunteers are doing their best to make sure MSU’s first-year students don’t feel alone.

“We are here to help freshmen who are getting ready to start classes tomorrow. We show them not only courses, but also organizations, and all of these organizations have different resources to help freshmen make the transition from high school to college,” said Jarius Isabell, student volunteer at the Resource Fair.

At the information fair, students were able to pick up their class schedules, find out where their classrooms are and learn more about how to get involved on campus. Eric Moyen, MSU’s assistant vice president for student success, said he hopes it shows parents that the university is doing its best to provide support to all students.

“The message is that we care about your children, we care about each of these students and we want to give them everything and equip them with everything they need to be successful. We are here to make sure your son or daughter is successful here at Mississippi State,” Moyen said.

Some people are often afraid to speak up and ask questions when they are unsure about something. This is another reason why this resource fair is necessary, according to Moyen.

“When an 18-year-old comes to campus, they often feel like everyone here has everything figured out and I’m the one who knows nothing. The reality is that you start here with thousands of other students and everyone has questions. We want them to know that it’s OK to ask questions. That’s what helps them succeed here,” Moyen said.

Every school is different, and that’s why MSU freshman Markese Rolen said an event like this helps him and other MSU freshmen better navigate campus.

“Not every college has enough resources, or at least not as many as Mississippi State. When we come here, the resources help us meet other people. Not only that, but these are lifelong friendships that can be made here. Take advantage of that opportunity while you’re here,” Rolen said.

The Resource Fair was held in the Old Main Academic Center, and faculty and staff hope that even more students will show up at next year’s Resource Fair.
