Powder Springs woman sues Cobb County police for million

Powder Springs resident Nicole Buchanan has filed a $5 million lawsuit against the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), alleging she was the victim of excessive force while executing an arrest warrant for her son on March 10, 2022. Buchanan, 50, is represented by national civil rights attorney Latrice Alexander.

The lawsuit alleges that Deputy Randall Lossing, Officer Richard Bozich, Officer William R. Brennan and Sheriff Craig D. Owens, Sr. violated Buchanan’s Fourth and Fourteenth Amendment rights, resulting in serious injury and emotional distress. According to the lawsuit, Buchanan was unarmed and handcuffed when she was forcibly thrown to the ground, even though she posed no threat to law enforcement.

Buchanan’s son, against whom the arrest warrant was issued, later died from circumstances unrelated to the incident.

In a statement released by Alexander, Buchanan claims that police officers who swore to uphold the law instead caused “significant, unjustified harm and injury” during the incident. The lawsuit aims to hold officers accountable for their actions and calls for the firing of officers who behave in this way, stressing that excessive use of force will not be tolerated in the community.
