Poll workers in Tulsa County ready for Election Day

Poll workers in Tulsa County ready for Election Day

“Voting is the most important thing we can do in this country,” said Tommy Carner.

As a former mayor of Glenpool, Carner is familiar with elections, but tomorrow’s election will be a little unfamiliar for him as this is his first time working as a poll worker.

“It’s honestly and truly a little intimidating. Hopefully at the end of the day the process won’t be as bad as I thought it would be,” he said.

Fortunately for Carner, a small group of experienced campaign workers, such as Rivea Harger, sit across the table, going through the long list of tasks that need to be completed.

“They crossed it out in our notebooks, they made our checklists really nice for us,” she said.

And what about the general staffing of polling stations?

“Our chances are really good for tomorrow’s election,” said Gwen Freeman, secretary of the Tulsa County Board of Elections.

And what about the integrity of the elections in this age of questions and doubts?

“I believe we have the most secure voting system in the country. If there is ever any doubt about how the election results came about or what they say on the machine, you can always go to the paper ballots that are there and recount them by hand,” Freeman said.

Meanwhile, Carner is ready to pick up poll worker materials and has a message for other people who are thinking about becoming poll workers themselves.

“If you want to participate in the political process at all, you can do it in a kind of back door way without having to be in front of people because you don’t have to campaign or anything like that,” he said.
