A missing person report is a public notification to police when a child is reported missing and is believed to be in danger, but the situation may not meet all of the criteria for an AMBER Alert.

For an AMBER Alert to be triggered, four criteria must be met. Law enforcement must confirm that an abduction has occurred, the child must be in danger of serious injury or death, there must be sufficient information about the child, the abductor, or the abductor’s vehicle, and the child must be under 18 years of age.

The purpose of a Level II At-Risk/Missing Child Alert is to quickly provide the public with information to assist in the search for the missing child.

The report may include details about the child, such as age, physical description, last known location, and other relevant information that may assist in locating the child, similar to AMBER alerts.

The exact criteria and procedures for issuing such a warning may vary from state to state or region.

A Level II At-Risk/Missing Child Alert means that the missing child is believed to be in danger.

There is a Level III Missing Child Alert. This is used when a child is missing but the case is less urgent or the child may not be in immediate danger.

Different jurisdictions may have different guidelines, terminology and criteria for reporting missing children.

Following the deaths of two children in 2022, Wisconsin introduced a missing child alert system that works in parallel with the AMBER alert system.
