Police and Good Samaritans rescue mother from submerged car: ‘Amazing’ to see her ‘come back to life’

A Texas woman survives thanks to the quick reaction of her children and the swift response of Good Samaritans and West Orange police.

After suffering a health incident while driving last month, Jonquetta Winbush drove her car into a pond, leaving only the rear bumper visible.

While driving through a town in southeast Texas, Epifanio Munguia noticed the vehicle and immediately rushed to help a police officer who ran into the water.

“I (saw) a vehicle in the water and I thought, I didn’t really believe it happened at that moment. I thought a tow truck was going to come and get the car out. And then I saw a police officer running toward the water and I realized it had just happened,” Munguia said Friday on “Fox & Friends First.”

“So I started praying, ‘Lord, give me strength, make me fast, make me strong, give me wisdom.’ So I pulled over, ran into the water and immediately tried to open the back window.”

West Orange police said Winbush suffered a seizure while driving, which left her unconscious with her foot on the accelerator. Winbush’s two children were also in the car when she drove into the water.

12-year-old Dwight Winbush and his 16-year-old sister were able to get out of the car and Dwight rushed to a nearby patrol officer, Charles Cobb.

“She’s having a seizure! She’s drowning! She’s in the water, help her!” a frightened Dwight said to Cobb, who quickly ran to the vehicle.

Munguia and another Good Samaritan, Corey Bull, followed the officer to help pull Jonquetta from the sinking car.

“I jumped into the water and immediately the car started to sink. I took a quick breath. I tried to get in and grab Jonquetta, but I couldn’t get hold of the seatbelt to unbuckle it,” Munguia said.

After he came up for air, Munguia said he heard one of the men shout, “We got them!”

“I felt like I had just won the lottery when that happened,” he said. “It was a great feeling.”

Officer Cobb immediately performed CPR and shortly thereafter, emergency responders were able to intervene and stabilize Jonquetta’s condition.

Jonquetta was admitted to the intensive care unit and remains there.

“I’m so incredibly grateful,” Jonquetta’s sister Bevnisha Holman told anchor Todd Piro. “I just can’t help but express how grateful I am that the kids were there with her, especially because they were both so brave. And I love that my nephew Dwight was told by his sister to go and flag down help.”

“I’m so grateful that Epifanio had the heart to just stop and help because this could have been a very different story. I’m so grateful.”
