Pokémon Trading Card Game player disqualified from World Championships due to “unsportsmanlike conduct”

Pokémon has always been promoted as a family-friendly series, and at last weekend’s World Championships, a participant in the Trading Card Game tournament was immediately disqualified after winning his quarterfinal match.

This took place in the Masters bracket (the highest division for players 16 and older), with competitor Ian Robb being knocked out of the Top 8, which was streamed live on Twitch and YouTube. According to an official statement obtained by Comicbook.com, The Pokémon Company International has awarded Robb a match loss for “unsportsmanlike conduct.”

While The Pokémon Company didn’t elaborate, the source notes that it’s “likely because Robb made a gesture with his hand after the win.” You can see the edited match video (from which this gesture was removed) above, but clips of this scene are still making the rounds on social media.

Even crazier is that Robb’s opponent, Fernando Cifuentes, actually won the entire tournament! It is believed that Robb also “potentially lost out on a guaranteed $20,000 prize for reaching the semifinals,” although he could still “get $15,000 of that back” if he is considered a top-8 finisher.

Fortunately, the tournament continued and during the closing ceremony, numerous game announcements and updates to the trading card game were released and even a release date was set for the mobile pocket version.
