The Pokémon Trading Card Game made a big announcement during the closing ceremony of the 2024 World Championships, revealing the return of the popular owner’s Pokémon mechanic. Worlds has often been the scene of major TCG reveals, such as last year’s closing ceremony that announced the return of ACE SPEC items. The 2024 edition of the most important gaming event of the year, held in Honolulu, Hawaii, did not disappoint, although there were some controversies surrounding the 2024 TCG World Championship that briefly took the spotlight.

For those who don’t know, the owner’s Pokémon design first appeared in the Gym Heroes expansionand have remained in the TCG ever since, though often limited to promotional cards and without a proper complete set around them. The owner’s Pokémon are tied to a specific trainer, organization, or location, and can usually only evolve from a similarly named basic Pokémon – for example, Misty’s Gyarados could only evolve from Misty’s Magikarp. It’s a popular designation that brings back fond memories of some of the franchise’s most famous heroes and villains, and it will return in 2025.

Lillie’s Clefairy and The Return Of N are the headliners

The announcement of the new owners Pokémon was accompanied by a lengthy animated trailer that was one of the best the company has ever produced for its trading card game. The Pokémon Trading Card Game will see the return of Owner’s Pokémon in 2025, with several trainers already set to be included in the set – most prominently the return of fan-favorite N and iconic versions of their Zoroark and Reshiram. Each card revealed in the trailer is as follows:

  • Lillie’s Clefairy EX
  • Marnie’s Grimmsnarl EX
  • Ns Reshiram
  • Ns Zoroark EX

In addition, the confirmation of some of these Pokémon means we can expect the following to also be included in the set:

  • Marnie’s Impidimp
  • Marnie’s Morning
  • Ns Zorua

We also caught a quick glimpse of several of these cards and their card text. Perhaps the most interesting card was N’s Zoroark EX, a new version of Zoroark GX that has the same ability in trades. Here’s a look at each of the cards we saw during our visit near the main stage of the Pokémon Worlds 2024 closing ceremony:

It may not be the newest idea Pokémon ever had, but it’s one of the best new coats of paint on an old one I’ve seen in a long time. ACE SPEC cards don’t quite have the same identity as the owner’s Pokémon, which bring really interesting deck-building restrictions due to the specifically set evolutionary lines – and they’re bursting with personality thanks to the characters associated with them, which helps make them instantly more fun to collect and play.
