From Skagway’s 4th-6th grade Planet Protectors

We are the Planet Protectors and we work together to keep the city clean. We talk to community members and business owners about how we can be more environmentally friendly and respectful of nature in our small community. Thanks to the support of our community, we recently funded a small recycling station for our school. We are grateful to the Westmark Hotel and Garden City Markets for their generous donations that made this possible! We are making many efforts to make our city greener. For example, before we purchased the recycling station, we started collecting paper from most classrooms every month and taking it to a recycling facility in Whitehorse.

If you are in Skagway and would like to help reduce the amount of trash we send to the incinerator, please help us recycle the following materials:

• Aluminium, glass and cardboard can all be recycled next to the Skagway Community Composting Building across from the Dyea turnoff.

• Paper cannot be recycled in Skagway, but both the school and library collect paper for recycling in Whitehorse.

• Unfortunately, plastic cannot be recycled in Skagway, but we encourage you to find other uses for it to reduce and reuse!

• Food waste can be placed next to the municipal compost house and processed into usable soil.

While recycling is great and a much better alternative to littering, we encourage you to think about how you can reduce the overall amount of waste you generate. Reduce your consumption and reuse whenever possible. Try to reduce first, then think about how you can reuse, then recycle!

On behalf of the Planet Protectors of Skagway and the environment, thank you for your support!
