Pitbull’s label and producer DJ White Shadow sued over “I Feel Good”

Pitbull’s label and producer DJ White Shadow sued over “I Feel Good”

It’s been a week of ups and downs for Pitbull. Well, I guess there was only one up and one down. On Tuesday, Mr. Worldwide became the first musician to acquire stadium naming rights when Florida International University announced a five-year deal to name its football facility Pitbull Stadium. On Thursday, his record label and producer were sued over one of his songs.

As Billboard A company called All Surface Publishing has reportedly filed a lawsuit in Manhattan federal court claiming that Pitbull’s 2021 dance hit “I Feel Good,” featuring Anthony Watts and DJWS, bears “significant similarities” to Debonair Samir’s 2006 song “Samir’s Theme.” According to the lawsuit, “the copyright infringement consists of an exact copy of a recognizable portion of plaintiff’s copied musical work.” The lawsuit also argues, “When heard in real time, the descending lines of both songs appear to be nearly identical.”

The lawsuit is not against Pitbull personally. Instead, All Surface is suing his label Mr. 305 Inc. and the producer of “I Feel Good,” DJ White Shadow (born Paul Edward Blair). The lawsuit alleges that All Surface owner Aaron LaCanfora sent “Samir’s Theme” to DJ White Shadow in 2011, to which White Shadow immediately responded, “I love that song.” However, Universal Music Group is also a defendant in the case. Billboard suggests that despite Mr. 305’s distribution deal with UMG-owned Ingrooves, the label is independent and wholly owned by Pitbull.
