“Men Mending Men in the Community” is a new organization founded with the aim, among other things, of supporting men released from prison and integrating them into society.

The organization grew out of conversations between Bryan Winters, who serves in various capacities, and his friend and colleague Phil Harvey about ways to provide emotional and spiritual support to incarcerated men.

One way they try to achieve this is by inviting everyone in the community to participate in community activities.

An event on August 10 was the group’s first opportunity to do so.

The event took place at the pool house in Washington Park at 4023 W. Galena St.

The theme of the event was “harm reduction,” an approach to treating substance abuse that focuses on methods to reduce use rather than complete abstinence.

The event began at 7:45 a.m. with a run led by Program Director John Coburn. After that, the atmosphere transformed into a mix of resource fair and barbecue with service vendors, free food and games.

The goal is to hold a similar event every other month.
