Philly Bookstore Crawl: A literary tour of the Northwest

Book lovers should mark their calendars for Saturday, August 24, as that’s when the Philly Bookstore Crawl returns, offering a day of literary discovery throughout the region, including bookstores in Northwest Philadelphia and the surrounding suburbs. This year’s Crawl promises a number of exciting events, giveaways, and special offers at some of the region’s most popular bookstores.

Chestnut Hill

Literary venues Hilltop Books, Multiverse and Booker have teamed up with local restaurants to offer a breakfast special for book lovers, available from 9am at Baker Street and Matine’s Cafe. After a tasty bite (or even before), visitors can head to the bookstores to discover all sorts of special offers to mark the crawl.

Booked. (8511 Germantown Avenue) offers outdoor sales and in-store specials throughout the day. Don’t miss the afternoon treat: a specialty cocktail/mocktail.

Hilltop Books (84 Bethlehem Pike Rear) will set up tables outside offering $2 and $4 books. The store will give away gifts and offer opportunities to support the local public library. Plus, with a $20 purchase at Hilltop, you’ll get 20% off at Matine’s Cafe across the street.

Multiverse (8026 Germantown Avenue) is offering 20-30% off science fiction, fantasy and horror novels. Shoppers who spend $25 or more between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. will be entered into a drawing for free tickets to a special screening of “The Labyrinth” with live orchestral music at the Keswick Theater.

Mount Airy

Large blue marble (551 Carpenter Lane) Families and young readers will find a haven offering free books and gifts from HarperCollins Publishers and Candlewick Press. Big Blue Marble is open from 11:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Supplies are limited, so early arrival is recommended.

Germantown

UMOJA House (6338 Germantown Ave.) offers an extensive selection of fiction, nonfiction and cultural literature for all ages, as well as a selection of coffee, gifts, stationery and candles.

Uncle Bobbie’s (5445 Germantown Ave.) The bookstore and cafe will feature its usual “Cool people. Great books. Great coffee,” and will surely also promote its upcoming events program featuring prominent authors such as rapper/actress Eve and Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson.

The suburbs

Capricorn Books (605 West Ave., Jenkintown) Rom-com author Laura Piper Lee will be signing books between noon and 3 p.m., and the store will be offering author Jennifer Weiner’s latest romance novel, “The Breakaway,” as a free gift.
