The Philadelphia Phillies were able to pull off a good job on Wednesday night, defeating the Miami Marlins by a final score of 9-5. It was a much-needed win as the Phillies look to snap out of their recent losing streak.
Heading into today’s game against the Washington Nationals, the Phillies will look to return to their World Series form.
Not long ago, Philadelphia was winning at an extremely high level. In their last 16 games, the Phillies are just 5-11. They need to figure out how to get back on track.
Tonight, Zack Wheeler will be on the mound as the starting pitcher for Philadelphia. That alone bodes well for the Phillies’ chances.
Wheeler has been an ace for the team this season, starting 23 games in 2024 and compiling a record of 11-5 along with a 2.78 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, 3.6 K/BB ratio, and 142.2 innings pitched.
Every time the 34-year-old starts, he gives Philadelphia a good chance to win.
On the other side of the field, the Nationals will start 24-year-old rookie Mitchell Parker. He has started 21 games this season, going 6-6 with a 3.83 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, 3.2 K/BB ratio and 112.2 innings pitched.
Both starters are top-notch pitchers and should make things difficult for the opposing lineup.
The Phillies need to get their lineup going. The nine runs in yesterday’s win over the Marlins were a step in the right direction.
There’s no reason why Philadelphia should have problems on offense. They’re loaded with stars, led by superstar first baseman Bryce Harper.
With only 42 games left in the season, the Phillies will have to come up with something. It would be depressing to see them fall apart in the home stretch, especially after the Philadelphia Eagles just did the same thing in the 2023 NFL season.
While the concerns are valid, the talent is there. Philadelphia just needs to regain its confidence and energy. A win tonight against Washington, which would be its second in a row, could help with that.
