Penei Sewell injury update: Detroit Lions receive good news about star right tackle

The Detroit Lions suffered an injury scare during practice on Wednesday after star right tackle Penei Sewell was forced out early.

According to multiple reports, Sewell left the field because he sustained a foot injury, although he was able to walk under his own power, which was certainly a good sign. We still don’t know exactly what’s wrong with his foot.

What we do know is that Sewell and the Lions appear to have gotten away with it once again. According to Justin Rogers of the Detroit Football Network, a team source told him Sewell is “doing fine” after his injury.

Sewell has shown impressive durability over the first three seasons of his career, with the Oregon native missing just one game in 2021 due to illness.

The Lions have struggled with injuries over the past few weeks, with many key players injured. Fortunately, head coach Dan Campbell has since released positive updates on many of those players.

“Right now, I think there’s a good chance most of our guys will be ready for Week 1,” Campbell said Tuesday, according to Erik Schlitt of the Pride of Detroit.

“Ennis (Rakestraw) will be back today (Tuesday). Carlton Davis will be limited today, Amik (Robertson) will be limited today and (Terrion) Arnold will not be back (today),” Campbell continued. “I think there’s a chance we could get him midweek, next week – to get a workout in before the guys go on break. But he’s trending in the right direction, I’m not worried.”

“We’re hoping to get a lot of players back the day after the Pittsburgh game (which is Saturday),” Campbell added. “We’re targeting Skip (Dan Skipper), (Kevin) Zeitler, (Sam) LaPorta, (Jahmyr) Gibbs, Rodrigo (Malcolm Rodriguez) and I think we might start using (DJ) Reader as well. We’ll start using him in one-on-one games. So we’re hoping to get a whole group of players back on Sunday.”

The Lions will play their final preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday, after which they will have two weeks to prepare for the regular season opener on Sunday, September 8th.
