Andrew and Ale Kenney, a passenger couple on Royal Caribbean’s Ultimate World Cruise, said they were evacuated from the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa in Iceland on Thursday, August 22, due to a volcanic eruption.

Accordingly Forbes, The latest eruption is the sixth volcanic eruption reported in this region in the last year.

The couple shared the scary update and their evacuation experience on Instagram and TikTok. In the video, Andrew said that “the volcano fire alarm is going off” and that they were “at the hot springs” at the time.

In another video, Ale added that it was “quite a terrifying experience” as she made her way out of the lagoon to safety.

“It’s pretty scary when the alarm goes off when you’re at the back of the pool,” she continued. “They ran towards us and we were still soaking wet.” Andrew said that when they were evacuated, they were told, “Don’t even change your clothes, don’t even take a shower.”

“We didn’t pay, even though we still had debts and everything, and then they said something like, ‘Just go, get out.'”

He also added that according to staff, “the last eruption, it took us five hours to get here, so time is on our side.” The video then switched to a view of the eruption as the pair drove to safety. They stopped to take more videos of the bubbling lava, with Ale saying, “This is crazy.”

The couple eventually returned to the cruise.

Ale added that the whole experience was “very scary, but we are all safe.”

In the caption of the video, the couple wrote: “Thankfully the Blue Lagoon staff were so professional and efficient that they got everyone out of there in time! Very scary and definitely not on our bingo card.”

The Ultimate World Cruise departed Miami on December 10, 2023. According to the official website, the cruise lasts 274 nights and visits a total of 160 destinations.

The cruise returns to Miami and officially ends on September 10, 2024.
