On Day 15, Australia reached its half century with two more silver medals – on the track and in the pool – bringing the total to 50 – 18 gold, 18 silver and 14 bronze.


  1. 1. athletics

    Jessica Hull lived up to expectations, claiming Australia’s track and field team’s seventh medal of the Games, only bettered by the best 1500m runner in history. While Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon justified her favourite status by winning gold at the Stade de France, Hull was not far behind, taking silver – the first Olympic medal of any colour over this distance won by an Australian.     There was to be no repeat of the heroics of Sydney 2000, as the Stingers lost the gold medal match to Spain 11-9. At La Défense Arena, the Australian women threatened to mount a late comeback, but failed to pull it off, leaving them with silver and their best placing in 24 years. “It’s not gold, but it’s silver and we’re damn proud of it,” said Bronte Halligan.     Anna Meares, Australia’s Chef de Mission at these Games, spoke about the trolling that breakdancing athlete Rachael Gunn has endured since her debut in Paris on Friday. Gunn, known as Raygun, was lambasted online after being knocked out by the judges without a point in the preliminary round. Meares stood up for her on Saturday, saying: “I love her bravery.   4. 4. Weightlifting

    Australia’s top weightlifter Eileen Cikamatana was moved to tears as she spoke of her disappointment after narrowly missing out on a medal in the 81kg class. The Fiji-born, double Commonwealth Games gold medallist finished fourth at the South Paris Arena and paid tribute to her experienced coach, 80-year-old Paul Coffa, afterward. “I owe him my life.   5. The U.S. women’s national team returned to the top of Olympic soccer after beating Brazil 1-0 to secure their fifth gold medal, their first since 2012. Mallory Swanson’s 58th-minute goal was the deciding factor as the U.S., led by new coach Emma Hayes, made a remarkable turnaround from being eliminated in the round of 16 at last year’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.     With the modern pentathlon seemingly no longer modern enough, the Olympics will bid farewell to the sport as we know it – after the Paris Games, equestrianism will be no more. For some, including Genevieve Janse van Rensburg, Australia’s only representative in France, it was a sad day at the Palais de Versailles as the sport reckons with the dawn of a new era.
