Padres ace breaks pitching world record to support Challenged Athletes Foundation

Major League Baseball recently published a story about the San Diego Padres star breaking a new world record that will put a smile on your face.

This year, the Padres have broken numerous franchise and MLB records. However, pitcher Joe Musgrove already broke a world record in January 2023.

To raise awareness for the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF), Musgrove traveled to Antarctica to throw balls with some friends. While he was there, he accidentally broke the record for the fastest throw in Antarctica.

Musgrove’s first pitch came in at 79 mph. After setting a target of 80 mph, he eventually worked his way up to 86 mph.

The trip came about after Musgrove hosted a fundraiser in September 2022 that raised nearly $100,000 for CAF. This included enough money for the Padres pitcher to take Landis Sims, a 16-year-old baseball player who was born without arms and lower legs.

After Musgrove threw his pitches, Sims followed suit and threw a 44 mph pitch. The San Diego pitcher then challenged him to reach 45 mph, which he did on the very next pitch.

They were also joined by two Paralympic athletes: Roderick Sewell, the first double above-the-knee amputee to finish the IRONMAN World Championship, and Justin Phongsavanh, a javelin thrower paralyzed below the waist who won gold at the 2019 Parapan American Games and bronze at the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo.

“This trip has exceeded all of my expectations, man,” Musgrove told AJ Cassavell of MLB.com. “There were so many moments on this trip that I’ll never forget, and the group that we came with couldn’t have been better. I’m just very, very grateful that I had the opportunity to be a part of this trip and try to make a little impact.”

“The whole idea of this trip was to push those limits and face things that will hold these athletes back because of their physical condition. To see these guys tackle each of those challenges head-on… They found a way to overcome them. We accomplished everything we set out to do.”

“The Challenged Athlete Foundation is committed to providing opportunities for people with physical limitations to participate in sport,” MLB said on social media. “Adaptive sports equipment such as prosthetic limbs or a sports wheelchair are expensive – and that’s where CAF comes in. Through grants and donations, they can provide specialized equipment, adaptive sports training, competition costs and recreational programs.”
