Outsider Brandon Codrington shows off his competition from the Jets

CHARLOTTE, NC – Jets cornerback Brandon Codrington was surrounded by friends and family at Saturday’s preseason win over the Panthers.

He put on a show for them and the Jets’ decision makers.

Codrington started the second half with a 63-yard kickoff return and then secured his chance at a spot on the roster with a 31-yard punt return.

Codrington is unlikely to make the active roster, but he could be a candidate for the training squad.

“(He) definitely took advantage of his opportunities,” Jets coach Robert Saleh said. “I think he was the most productive for both teams. He set up a couple of scoring drives. That’s what he’s here for. That’s why we brought him in, his punt return and kick return skills. I thought he did a really good job tonight.”

Codrington grew up in Raleigh, NC and attended North Carolina Central.

The Jets signed him as a non-drafted free agent following their rookie minicamp in May.

Codrington makes it into the squad as a returnee.

“I try to make the most of my opportunity,” he said. “Every time I step on the field, I do my best and have no regrets. If I mess up, I make sure I fly around.”

Codrington said he thought he would score on both returns.

“I honestly have,” he said. “Every time I get the ball, that’s my mindset, I just try to win it back.”

CB Jarrick Bernard-Converse, who had a strong training camp, left the game in the second quarter with a groin injury and did not return.

Saleh said Bernard-Converse has been recovering from his injury for several days.

WR Irv Charles left the game in the second quarter due to a hip injury.

Charles almost blocked a punt earlier in the game.

The Jets not only gave starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers a break, but also backup Tyrod Taylor.

Freshmen Andrew Peasley and Adrian Martinez played, with Peasley playing the first half and Martinez the second.

“I wanted to get a good look at (Peasley) and Martinez,” Saleh said. “We’ll change it up next week depending on how everything goes and who goes out first. I just wanted to get a good look at those two rookies.”

Neither quarterback contributed much in the game.

Peasley completed 7 of 11 passes for 33 yards and Martinez completed 7 of 17 for 67 yards with one interception.
