Oscar De La Hoya, world champion in six weight classes, has never been one to avoid confrontation with active fighters. His most famous clash was the ongoing feud with Canelo Alvarez. However, in the Mexican superstar’s most recent provocation, “Golden Boy” also took aim at Edgar Berlanga and Devin Haney.
While De La Hoya’s clashes with Alvarez are the best documented, the 1992 Olympic gold medalist has most recently been lambasted for Berlanga, who is scheduled to face Canelo in a few weeks. To spite the undefeated super middleweight, De La Hoya joked that he was more Puerto Rican than Berlanga because he lived there for four years, responding to Berlanga’s belief that the country was behind him.
Instead, De La Hoya posted a video declaring that “Puerto Rico has no claim to Edgar Berlanga” and that he is not a Puerto Rican but a New Yorker.
Much to De La Hoya’s delight, those words sparked a response from the “Chosen One,” who announced on social media that De La Hoya had been trying to sign for the past year and “flew in to meet with him.”
In typical De La Hoya fashion, he now hit back with a response of his own, but refused to deny the legitimacy of Berlanga’s comments and instead persisted with the question of whether Berlanga was really Puerto Rican.

“Edgar Berlanga, I criticized you for not being Puerto Rican – I was simply stating the facts. So you were embarrassed and posted a 14 year old photo of me that the world has seen a million times and posted as a meme? Bro, why didn’t you just post your Puerto Rican birth certificate? Unless you don’t have one. Don’t tell me you’re another idiot who finds the truth offensive, come on bro.”
In the same video, De La Hoya then turned his attention to Devin Haney, whom he has recently become disliked after Haney’s loss to Ryan Garcia was turned into a no-contest and an altercation broke out between the fight and all the drama.
Here, De La Hoya poked fun at a recent clip circulating online that appeared to show the former undisputed lightweight champion in a fairground bout before signing off with a familiar message to Canelo Alvarez.
“In other news, Devin Haney had his comeback fight last week…at the Orange Country State Fair! I don’t know if you saw the whole video, but Devin swings at a civilian while standing in front of the Ferris wheel…and he misses! Bro, your dream has officially turned into a freaking nightmare.”
“And as always, the most important topic of every week – Canelo. F**k you!”
Despite De La Hoya’s disapproval since the event was announced, Canelo-Berlanga will take place on September 14th in the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas for the unified WBC, WBA and IBF super middleweight titles and can be watched live on Amazon Prime Video PPV.
