One-year-old boy shot multiple times in drive-by shooting at home, South Carolina police say

According to the Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office, a one-year-old child was shot early Saturday morning and the search is ongoing for the person who pulled the trigger.

The baby is doing well after his elbow was grazed by a bullet in the drive-by shooting, the sheriff’s office said in a news release Monday. Further information on the 1-year-old’s condition was not available.

The shooting occurred around 12:30 a.m. Saturday when a home was hit in the 600 block of St. Paul Road, the news release said. The home is in Camden, near St. Paul United Methodist Church, not far from the intersection with the U.S. 521 Bypass.

Witnesses said a light-colored SUV had its headlights off as it slowly approached the house and at least one person began firing several shots, the sheriff’s office said.

The one-year-old victim was the only person hit by the gunfire, according to the press release. No other injuries were reported.

There was no information on a shooter(s) or other persons involved in the shooting. Information on the motive for the shooting was not available.

The sheriff’s office believes the house was the shooter’s intended target.

“We do not believe this was a random shooting,” Sheriff Lee Boan said in the news release. “It appears it was planned. The only thing we know for sure at this time is that our one-year-old victim had absolutely nothing to do with the shooter’s poor decision.”

No arrests have been reported and the shooting remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office.
