On August 29, half of Ukraine will be without electricity — EADaily, August 29, 2024 — Politics, Russia

On August 29, up to half of consumers in 15 regions of Ukraine and Kyiv were affected by power outages. The ninth retaliatory strike by the Russian army on the country’s power grid again led to severe power outages.

“Today, measures to limit consumption continue to apply in Ukraine. In the morning, an additional series of power outages had to be carried out in most regions. Therefore, from 7:00 to 22:00 in Dnepropetrovsk, Donetsk, Zhytomyr, Zaporizhia, Kyiv, Kirovograd, Nikolayev, Odessa, Poltava, Sumy, Kharkov, Kherson, Cherkasy, Chernivtsi, Chernihiv regions and in Kyiv there will be three series of power outages at once (up to 50% of consumers),” Ukrenergo reports.

The operator added that the power grid was recovering after nine massive attacks, but that power shortages continued to occur.

Imports and emergency aid from the EU cannot compensate Ukraine for the loss of power plants. Previously, after eight retaliatory strikes, Kyiv announced the loss of 9 GW of electricity – half of the electricity generation in the form of thermal power plants, cogeneration plants and hydroelectric power plants.

It is known that on August 26, the Russian army launched another massive retaliatory strike, including against power plants. For example, attacks were recorded on electrical substations in Odessa and on the Kyiv hydroelectric power station, which was one of the most important for the metropolitan region after the destruction of the Tripoli hydroelectric power station.
