Olympic team receives gold medals two and a half years after the event

The U.S. team figure skaters who competed in the 2022 Winter Olympics have finally received their medals two years later due to a scandal.

At the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing, Team USA athletes – Nathan Chen, Vincent Zhou, Karen Chen, Alexa Knierim, Brandon Frazier, Madison Chock, Evan Bates, Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue – initially finished second.

But yesterday (August 7) they were awarded gold medals and Team Japan received silver medals.

However, all this confusing behavior goes back to an incident that caused a great stir.

In 2022, Russia initially emerged victorious, winning gold – but then it turned out that one of their athletes, Kamila Valieva, had tested positive for banned substances.

Tests revealed that she tested positive for the banned substance trimetazidine. Further reports showed that Valieva received 56 medications, foods and nutritional supplements over a two-year period between the ages of 13 and 15, according to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, according to BBC.

She received a four-year ban and her victory was subsequently revoked.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) then decided not to award medals in this competition while an investigation was carried out to find out who should be placed where.

And today, in the present, Team USA was finally crowned winners and received their medals.

During the competition near the Eiffel Tower, the athletes were beaming from ear to ear.

Thousands of fans watched and the athletes held bouquets of flowers in their hands and proudly wore their medals around their necks.

NPR reports that people chanted “USA!”

Two athletes, Bates and Chock, appeared to be crying and “The Star Spangled Banner” played in the background.

On July 25, it was announced that Team USA was the winner and would receive its medals at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

The committee announced on July 25 that the U.S. team’s gold medals would be awarded two and a half years later at the Olympic Games in Paris.

The IOC stated: “(The IOC has) great sympathy for the athletes who have had to wait two years for the final results of their competition.”

“The IOC will liaise with the respective (National Olympic Committees) to organise a dignified Olympic medal ceremony.”

On social media, people reacted with joy to the scenes.

One person wrote: “Finally! Congratulations Team USA,” while another said: “Beautiful. Glad you finally got them. Especially great to see you sing the Star-Spangled Banner. You do us proud.”

A third added: “I’m so happy they finally got their medals. This was long overdue!”
