Officials from the Bradford County Sheriff’s Office deny the parents’ claims, investigations are ongoing

STARKE, Fla. (WCJB) – Officials with the Bradford County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) on Sunday denied a mother’s claim that her daughter was pushed to the sidewalk following an altercation at a local elementary school.

Sheriff Gordon Smith said in a social media post that his office’s investigation has so far revealed no evidence of criminal wrongdoing, citing an initial post by the mother, Jacquelynn Jurian.

Jurian originally posted on a community forum called “Bradford County Word of Mouth” on Thursday, asking anyone who witnessed the incident to contact her.

Jurian claims her child, who is in second grade at Bradford Elementary School, was not behaving aggressively when the incident occurred around 7:30 a.m. on the first day of school near the school’s preschool drop-off gate.

Jurian wrote that several teachers touched her daughter, including one who pushed her face down on the sidewalk and another teacher who held her daughter by the strap of her backpack.

It is unclear why the teachers tried to restrain the child, but Jurian claims her daughter tried to “pull herself away, which is a natural reflex when people suddenly start touching you everywhere.”

According to authorities, all of the people they interviewed about the incident “agreed with the manner in which the incident was handled by school district personnel” and stated that the teacher sat on the ground next to the student to prevent her from running from the student drop-off line into the street instead of holding the girl.

Sheriff Smith said the child stayed at school and visited for the next few days. Smith denied that anyone had acted on the child.

Authorities say the school district is investigating the incident, but state law does not allow it to comment publicly at this time.
