OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) — From mixing drinks to serving potentially life-saving naloxone spray and fentanyl test strips, Oakland’s Legionnaire Saloon is working to keep people safe as the drug crisis continues.

“I’ve seen NARCAN at work firsthand on these streets,” said bartender Brooke Fitzgerald. “Having the test strips and NARCAN on hand is so important that most of us carry it with us, like in our purse or backpack, as we walk the streets.”

The bar partners with FentCheck, a nonprofit that works with bars and nightclubs to help provide resources and education.

“Similar to the free condoms you saw in bar toilets during the AIDS crisis, we’ve done it with test strips that give people anonymous and free access,” said Alison Heller, co-founder of FentCheck.

Fentanyl test strips can be used to test drugs such as cocaine and heroin for the presence of the powerful opioid.

“We also make sure that the life-saving drug NARCAN is available in all of these bars and nightclubs, and we educate and train bartenders on how to reverse an overdose,” Heller said.

This Saturday, International Overdose Awareness Day, this training will take place at the Legionnaire Saloon.

“I feel safe and I feel like no one is going to slip through my fingers, although that’s certainly possible these days,” Fitzgerald said, noting that it’s about helping everyone. “People on the street need help too, you know what I mean. It’s about community, it’s not just about the patrons of this bar, it’s about the people outside.”
