NYT “Connections” August 26: Clues and answers for game #442

Happy Monday, puzzle fans. We are back with another set of tips for today’s New York Times Connections Puzzle, presented by Newsweek.

In the wake of WordleThe phenomenal success of – a game that thrilled millions and was The New York Times Early 2022 – the presented paper Connections in 2023. This new puzzle game has quickly gained a loyal global fan base, with players eagerly discussing strategies and sharing their daily results on social media.

Connections can be quite challenging, and a little nudge can sometimes make all the difference. If you’re here for a clue, you’ve come to the right place. The answers to the Monday puzzle are at the end of this article, so proceed with caution if you prefer to solve it yourself.

Game instructions Connections

Daily, Connections provides players with a grid of 16 words. The goal is to organize these words into four groups of four based on common themes or characteristics.

The four groups are color-coded according to difficulty: yellow (easiest), green, blue and purple (most difficult). Choose four words that you think form a group. If these words are correct, they are highlighted and removed from the board. The color corresponding to the group is shown, indicating the expected level of difficulty.

Players have up to four chances to guess incorrectly before the game ends. There is no time limit, so there’s no need to rush. You can also shuffle the words on the board to spot connections you may have initially missed.

Connections Editor Wyna Liu advises that once players have found five words that seem to fit into one category, they should first try categorizing a different group. This approach can help clarify which words belong together by process of elimination.

  • Green category: Torus-shaped things
    • Green words: bagel, lifesaver, tire, wreath
  • Blue Category: Bad Golf Shots
    • Blue words: hook, shaft, disc, breath
  • Purple Category: Shoes without “Er” sound
    • Purple words: loaf, slip, sneak, calf
