Everyone has their own tactics when it comes to the solution connections.
The daily word game on the New York Times The game website and app require playfully putting together four groups of words to reveal their connecting theme.
Connections Editor Wyna Liu has previously pointed out that if you find five words that might fit into one category, it’s often best to try to put them in another group first. This strategy can help you figure out where the words really belong by process of elimination.
“My best advice is to wait as long as possible before guessing,” she said. “You may see the board and have already fully identified the category because you see five words that could belong in that category,” she said Newsweek in June.
“Don’t try to guess the four words in this category, because even though you know which is the fifth member, you don’t know which of the four it might not be,” which would ultimately waste a turn.
Liu also told the NYT that the words are deliberately placed on the board at the beginning of a game, so it is worth shuffling the pieces before you get stuck trying to solve them.

How to play “Connections”
This puzzle requires players to classify 16 words into four categories based on their association. For example, one game involved linking the words “clear,” “earn,” “make,” and “net,” all of which fell into the category “take home, as income.”

Each of the four categories is marked with a color that also indicates the level of difficulty. Yellow is the easiest category, followed by green, blue, and then purple. The puzzles are rarely easy, however, instead using homophones and wordplay, among other things, to keep things interesting.
The connecting themes can come from a variety of categories – from Halloween costumes to music genres.
When all four words in each sentence are placed correctly, those words are removed from the board. Each incorrect guess counts toward the error count. Up to four errors can be made before the game is over.
