NYS Fair Concert Guide: Disco and R&B queens take center stage on Pride Day (Friday, August 23)

NYS Fair Concert Guide: Disco and R&B queens take center stage on Pride Day (Friday, August 23)

Welcome to our daily New York State Fair concert guide! We will be posting a list of music artists and show times every day of the 2024 NYS Fair on syracuse.com.

There are two main stages: Suburban Park and Chevy Court. Suburban Park will host the fair’s largest concerts in the New York Experience area on the west end near Gate 10, at the back of the Midway and behind the Expo Center. Chevy Court is near Gate 1, next to the Center of Progress Building and next to the Dairy Products Building. Both have limited seating.

No tickets are required for concerts. All are free when you include admission to the fair, which is $8 this year – and seniors 65 and older and children under 12 are free. Friday, August 23 is Pride Day, New Americans Day and Family Fishing Day.

Here’s what you can expect on Friday, August 23, 2024 (Day 3):

Sophie B. Hawkins – 1pm at Chevy Court

Hawkins is a Grammy-nominated singer from New York who recently celebrated the 30th anniversary of her debut album, Tongues and Tails, which features the hit single “Damn I Wish I Wish I Was Your Lover.” The song has been called a “lesbian anthem” and the artist, who is also known as a women’s rights and LGBTQ+ activist, was praised for her “daring fluidity” as she “challenged the norms of gender expression and sexual orientation at a time when political, social and sexual labels were more rigid.”

Sister Sledge – 6 p.m. at Chevy Court

Sister Sledge is a sister group best known for the 1979 hit “We Are Family,” as well as funky disco/dance songs such as “Lost in Music,” “He’s the Greatest Dancer,” and “Thinking of You.” The Grammy-nominated band features founding member Debbie Sledge and other members of the Sledge family, including Camille Sledge, Tanya Ti-et, Thaddeus Sledge, and David Sledge, honoring original singer Joni Sledge, who died in 2017.

TLC – 8pm at Suburban Park

Known for the hits “Creep,” “Waterfalls,” “Unpretty,” and “No Scrubs,” TLC was one of the most popular female music groups of the 1990s, mixing pop, hip-hop, and R&B. Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins and Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas have continued to perform under the name TLC since the death of Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes in 2002; Watkins and Thomas produced the 2013 biopic “CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story” and released a new album, “TLC,” in 2017.

The group drew one of the 25 largest crowds in NYS Fair history in 2022, with 30,000 people on the same stage then called Chevy Park. Fans are encouraged to dress like they did in the ’90s for tonight’s concert.
