NYPD officers shoot 62-year-old man outside NYCHA building in East Harlem

According to NYPD officials, police officers shot and killed a man carrying a gun outside a NYCHA complex in East Harlem early Sunday.

Martine Materasso, chief of the NYPD’s Housing Authority, said the department received several calls reporting a man brandishing a gun outside the Washington Houses near the corner of East 103rd Street and Third Avenue around 12:30 a.m. When officers arrived, the man refused to drop his weapon, according to Materasso.

“The officers verbally ordered the man to drop his weapon several times, but he did not comply,” said Martine Materasso, head of the NYPD’s housing division, at a press conference outside the NYCHA complex early Sunday morning. “The two officers fired their weapons and struck the man.”

Police officials did not identify the man but said he was 62 years old. He was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

NYPD officials said a gun was recovered at the scene Saturday and the investigation into the shooting is ongoing.

The incident brings the number of people shot by NYPD officers so far this year to at least 10, according to data compiled by Gothamist.

In May, police officers in East Flatbush shot and killed a 33-year-old man after they said he was seen pointing a gun at another man. That same month, police officers shot and killed a 26-year-old man with mental health issues who NYPD officials said attacked officers with knives after police tasered him.
