While Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) topped Interactive Brokers’ (IBKR) weekly list of the most active stocks, the symbols associated with the AI chip maker in the rankings underscored the company’s influence on the broader market, the trading platform said before Nvidia released its second-quarter earnings report.
Nvidia (NVDA) recorded gross transactions of 586.99k shares and options on the IBKR platform ahead of the release of Q2 results late Wednesday. This figure puts Nvidia at the top of IBKR’s list of the 25 most active symbols over the past five sessions as of Tuesday. Symbols associated with (NVDA) in the top 10 positions included Direxion Daily Semiconductor Bull 3X Shares ETF (SOXL), ProShares UltraPro QQQ ETF (TQQQ) and Super Micro Computer (SMCI).
“We’ve become accustomed to seeing NVDA at the top of the rankings almost every week, which underscores its key role in investor psychology,” IBKR chief strategist Steve Sosnick said Tuesday. “Looking beyond that, it’s quite clear that the company plays a critical role in influencing a variety of other popular investment vehicles.”
Sosnick has previously referred to Nvidia (NVDA) as the “market atlas,” referring to the company’s “apparent ability to lift the entire market onto its broad shoulders,” he said. In this week’s list:
#4 and #9: Direxion Daily Semiconductor Bull 3X Shares ETF (SOXL) and Direxion Daily Semiconductor Bear 3X Shares ETF (SOXS). Some investors sought to triple their exposure to semiconductors with the ETFs, as Nvidia (NVDA) is a 9.5% contributor to the benchmark Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (SOX). “Interestingly, the unleveraged (SOXX) is not on the list. Our clients like action,” Sosnick said.
#6: ProShares UltraPro QQQ ETF (TQQQ): “NVDA’s weight in the Nasdaq-100 (NDX) is just over 8%, so it will obviously have an impact on ETFs that track NDX,” Sosnick said, referring to the 3x-leveraged TQQQ, which ranked No. 6.
A “weak demand” for Nvidia (NVDA) products could impact other semiconductor stocks, such as #3 (AMD), No. 20 (INTC) and No. 22 (MU).
Tesla (TSLA) at No. 2 and Super Micro Computer (SMCI) at No. 8 are some of (NVDA)’s top clients. Other clients on the list included (META), (AMZN), (AAPL) and (MSFT). Alphabet (GOOGL)(GOOG) “would complete the Mag 7 superfecta but didn’t make the list this week,” Sosnick said.
