NSF Game Design Contest Challenges Students in Grades 1-12 to Imagine ‘Life in 2100’: Maui Now

A new video game design competition with a $100,000 prize challenges students from kindergarten through high school to combine technology and imagination.

The competition was launched last week by the US National Science Foundation (NSF) and invites students to think about what the world might look like in 75 years. The games are based on the theme “Life in the year 2100”.

It’s a nod to the agency’s 75th anniversary celebrations, where students compete in various prize categories for up to $7,500 and have their games showcased. An additional prize can also go to mentors, teachers or parents/guardians who have supported teams in application and game development.

Awards for the best performances ($5,000 per category) recognize various aspects of game development, including:

  • Best educational game.
  • Best STEM discovery.
  • Best technical ability.
  • Best storytelling.
  • Best art and design.
  • Award for best game for grades K-6.

Awards of Merit ($2,500 x 20 total prizes) recognize exceptional overall quality and innovation in video game development. Awards for mentoring support ($1,000 x 20 total prizes) honor mentors, teachers or parents who support teams in developing applications and video games.

The journey to Life in 2100 begins now. Students have until January 31, 2025 at 5:00 p.m. EST. Details online at the NSF Game Maker Awards website.

“The NSF Game Maker Awards challenge young minds to unleash their creativity and sharpen their technical skills as they explore STEM concepts,” said NSF Director Sethuraman Panchanathan. “By sparking their imagination and interest in STEM at a young age, we hope to nurture future innovators who will drive scientific and technological advancement.”

The NSF Game Maker Awards for K-12 is a call to action for students across the country to immerse themselves in the world of game design and STEM, think critically and creatively about the future, and contribute unique perspectives to the ongoing dialogue about the evolution of our planet. With this challenge, NSF hopes to nurture the next generation of scientists, engineers, and game designers who will lead us into a bright and innovative future.

NSF will work with nonprofits, industry partners, and community organizations to create a robust support system that improves access to resources and promotes collaborative learning.

The competition encourages students to explore NSF-funded research areas, including sustainable ecosystems, futuristic cities and advanced medical technology.

NSF Game Maker Award winners will be invited to a special in-person event where they can showcase their games, network with other innovators, and meet industry leaders in gaming and STEM.
