Notes: Jerry Jeudy says his knee feels good and he has a good feeling about working with Deshaun Watson

BEREA – The beginning of Jerry Jeudy’s career with the Browns was marked by ups and downs.

He joined the team in a trade with the Broncos in March, injured his knee during organized team activities, missed minicamp, started training camp late and has been on and off the roster since his return.

“I ran a route and adjusted it a little bit during OTAs, but now I’m back. Back and moving on,” the receiver said Tuesday. “I feel pretty good, I’m just taking it day by day. Every day I’m improving and working to get better, so I feel good.”

Kevin Stefanski says the team is yet to make the final decision on whether Deshaun Watson and the other regular players will play against the Seahawks

Jeudy said he appreciates the medical staff’s methodical approach. And despite missing reps with quarterback Deshaun Watson, Jeudy is confident they’re on the same page and will be aligned on Sept. 8 when the Cowboys come to the lakeshore for the season opener.

“It’s about communication, constant communication with each other,” he said. “I ask him a little bit about where he wants me on certain routes and in certain situations, and I constantly ask him what he thinks of my route.”

“That’s the most important thing since I haven’t had that much repetition on the field.”

Training Camp Log, Day 15: Players discuss the importance of snaps in preseason

Jeudy was able to practice last week, and whenever he was on the field, the connection with Watson seemed strong. They would have played together on a deep sideline route on Tuesday, but Jeudy juggled the ball and couldn’t get both feet in the field. He smashed the ball out of frustration.

“When I was out there playing and practicing, it looked good,” Jeudy said before practice. “Hopefully it stays that way.”

He hopes for a full schedule of replays over the next two weeks and possibly Saturday night at the final preseason game in Seattle.

“It’s all about timing with the quarterback,” he said of what can be accomplished. “Timing, understanding the route concept, understanding where the coaching and the quarterback want me at certain spots and on certain routes. That’s really the most important thing.”

Receivers Amari Cooper and Elijah Moore also missed time during camp, so Watson was only able to play with all three of his top wideouts in a few practices.

“I think the players we have here are not going to slow us down at all,” Jeudy said. “We’re very smart players, understand the game, understand the fundamentals of football, so I think that’s not going to hurt us at all. When Game 1 comes, hopefully we’ll all be on the field together.”

INJURY REPORT

Cooper did not practice, although coach Kevin Stefanski said he would practice. Cooper took the field, albeit without a helmet, and lined up for the first team offensive line during a run-through.

He left the field during training on Thursday with an unspecified injury.

** Cornerback Denzel Ward remained out. He has not practiced since being placed in concussion protocol last week.

** Linebacker Tony Fields II (leg) and safety Rodney McLeod (leg) returned. Fields had missed more than two weeks.

** Tight end David Njoku did not practice after being slow to get up on Thursday and then not participating in team drills.

** Defensive tackle Maurice Hurst II did not practice Thursday after grabbing his hamstring and leaving practice. He is not expected to miss much time.

** Dustin Hopkins kicked on the away field while Charley Hughlett snapped. Hopkins did not kick in the first two preseason games and has not done much in practice as he deals with an unspecified injury.

“He’s feeling better,” Stefanski said.

** Defensive end Alex Wright, cornerback Tony Brown II and newly signed linebacker Brandon Bouyer-Randle were placed on the non-practice list due to unspecified injuries.

** Tackle James Hudson III (ankle) will not practice this week and tight end/fullback Giovanni Ricci (knee) will miss several weeks.

** Also out were left tackle Jedrick Wills Jr. (knee), right tackle Jack Conklin (knee), running backs Nick Chubb (knee) and Nyheim Hines (knee), linebackers Justin Hicks (injury undisclosed) and Nathaniel Watson (injury undisclosed), cornerback Greg Newsome II (hamstring), defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson (knee), safeties Ronnie Hickman (back) and D’Anthony Bell (shin), receiver David Bell (quadriceps), guard Michael Dunn (undisclosed) and center Luke Wypler (ankle).

COULD HAVE BEEN WORSE

Defensive end Za’Darius Smith wasn’t happy about missing a week of practice, but was thankful that the knee injury he suffered on Aug. 5 was just a bruise when he collided with running back Jerome Ford.

“I completely slid and my back had to block me, but I was going full speed and we collided with our knees,” Smith said.

He said the injury could have been more serious.

“Yes, I was in a lot of pain at the moment, but I had so many thoughts going through my head,” he said. “But I’m just glad it was just a bruised knee. I’m definitely glad to be back.”

LONG AND ANGLED PATH

The Browns expected their only away game of the preseason to be close to home.

The NFL has sent them to Seattle for a game that begins at 10 p.m. Cleveland time.

“That surprised us,” said Stefanski.

He mentioned that the Browns probably won’t be back in town until 8 a.m. Sunday.

“Honestly, it’s no big deal,” he said. “Look, there are worse things in life. We’re on a nice plane, so it’ll be OK.”

The Browns will fly out on Thursday to get used to the time change.

“We’re going to take care of business, come home and get ready for Dallas,” safety Grant Delpit said.

EXTRA POINTS

The Browns welcomed active and former military personnel to the Salute to Service Day. Stefanski and players signed autographs.

**Like a regular season week, coaches will determine portions of the schedule throughout the week.

** The Patriots have claimed receiver Matt Landers off waivers after he was released by the Browns.
