Nominate a veteran who is committed to the community for a Congressional Award

Do you know a veteran who is involved in the Central Texas community?

You can nominate them for a conference award.

25 messages I spoke to a veteran who works as a surgeon at the local VA clinics and received the award last year.

Dr. Robert Solenberger served in the Army for over 25 years as a medical professor and surgeon – in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“People who protect what they protect have incredible strength,” said Dr. Solenberger.

During his career, he was the Army’s second pediatric surgeon and the only surgeon to successfully separate conjoined triple-legged twins.

He currently serves his fellow veterans in Temple and Waco as a general surgeon.

“What could you do that would be more useful?” he said.

Last year, he was one of 13 veterans to receive the Congressional Veterans Commendation Award for outstanding military members who continue to give back to their community.

This is an award given annually by Congressman Pete Sessions to residents of the 17th district on Veterans Day.

“It’s veterans honoring veterans. People honoring those who serve the community and those who serve at home,” Sessions said.

He says he gave this award to Dr. Solenberger because he has provided such outstanding service.

“He was in Afghanistan and Iraq and came back as chief surgeon to make sure the people he served with got the care they needed at the VA,” Sessions said.

The award meant a lot to Dr. Solenberger, whose life’s work is to help others.

“It’s one of the most humbling things in my life,” he said.

If you are interested in nominating someone, the nomination must be received by mail by this Thursday. It will still be accepted if received a few days later.
