NFL Cutdown Day shows how wrong the 49ers were with the 2022 draft class

Barring one very important pick, the San Francisco 49ers would probably like to repeat their work in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Like the rest of the NFL, the 49ers trimmed their roster to 53 players on Tuesday, and the changes they made only further highlighted how bad their 2022 draft class was. Aside from quarterback Brock Purdy, who was selected as the last pick of the entire draft, the group of players selected is a mess.

San Francisco released wide receiver Danny Gray and cornerback Samuel Womack on Tuesday, becoming the last two players from the 2022 class to be released. The 49ers selected nine players in the 2022 draft, and four of them are no longer with the team.

San Francisco did not have a first-round pick in 2022, as the disastrous trade in the 2021 draft led to a move up and the selection of Trey Lance. AP’s Josh Dubow has put together a breakdown of the players selected, and for 49ers fans, it may be depressing.

Second-round linebacker Drake Jackson is expected to miss the season after suffering a knee injury, the second he has suffered in as many seasons.

Gray and Ty Davis-Price were both third-round picks and are gone.

Offensive tackle Spencer Burford was selected in the fourth round and is currently a backup.

Another offensive tackle, Nick Zakelj, was selected in the sixth round and is also a backup. Defensive lineman Kalia Davis was a sixth-round pick, is a backup and is currently on the injured list. Cornerback Tariq Castro-Fields was also a sixth-round pick and has never played for San Francisco.

Purdy was selected in the seventh round (No. 262), led the team to Super Bowl LVIII, was an MVP finalist in 2023 and made the Pro Bowl last season.

Yes, selecting Purdy prevented the draft from being a total disaster, but the rest of the group may never end up contributing.
