Newport’s 2025 St. Patrick’s Day Parade to Honor Jack Kane

The Newport Saint Patrick’s Day Parade Committee has announced that the 2025 parade will be dedicated to the memory of Jack Kane, a beloved longtime resident and active community member who passed away on July 19, 2024 at the age of 90.

The committee shared the news on Facebook on August 11, stating, “The 2025 Newport Saint Patrick’s Day Parade is proudly dedicated to Jack Kane, a long-time 5th Warder and active community member. He will be missed by all who knew him and we will remember him for a long time.”

The parade, scheduled for March 15, 2025, will honor Kane’s life and his significant contributions to the Newport community.

According to his obituary, Kane, who was a proud resident of the Fifth Ward for most of his life, was known for his diverse career and tireless commitment to public service. He worked at various establishments, including the Casino Tennis Hall of Fame and Gustave White Auctions, before devoting 25 years to the Newport Fire Department.

During his time as a firefighter, Kane served as union president for 15 years, demonstrating his leadership skills and commitment to his colleagues. His loyalty to his fellow firefighters remained unwavering throughout his life.

Kane’s involvement in the community extended well beyond his professional life. He was a life member of the Newport Ancient Order of Hibernians, where he was named Hibernian of the Year in 2017. He also belonged to the AOH Singers and was a life member of the Newport Elks.

A devout Catholic, Kane regularly attended St. Augustine’s Church, where he also sang in the choir for many years. His passion for music was evident in all aspects of his life, and his home was often filled with melody.

Kane’s love of sports was another defining trait. He coached the Pop Warner football team and the St. Augustine CYO basketball team, was an avid golfer and a long-time member of the Green Valley Country Club.

His commitment to the Newport Country Club, where he served as clubhouse manager, earned him lifetime playing privileges in recognition of his service to the club and its members.

Kane’s family life was equally rich. He was married for over 67 years to his late wife Mary Ellen, who passed away in May 2022. He leaves behind six children, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and even a great-great-granddaughter.

Now a tribute to Jack Kane, Newport’s 2025 Saint Patrick’s Day Parade promises to be a momentous event as the community comes together to celebrate the life of a man who dedicated decades to serving and enriching Newport.
